Durian Kasap Merah, Segamat, Johor

DURIAN MERAH or KASAP MERAH
Kebangaan Segamat sejak hujung tahun 80an

Namun, teksturnya agak lembut.

Setiap tahun memang tertunggu-tunggu kemunculan durian Buluh Kasap!

Sky Bridge/ Sky Window, Batu Kawa

Fieldwork at Mukah, Sarawak: Melanau Youth livelihood & Sago

DAY 3

I went to Kampung Teh, Dalat to visit Hazwani's family who is a sago smallholder. Sago farming is her family tradition. During the visit, I met his grandfather, Akek bin Nyawan (86 years), father Rapiee Jaimin bin Yahya (68 years), Cousin Suvien or Yem,  sister Nurfazrina and Hazwani .  The sago smallholder tradition comes from her mother side. Her father is a retired teacher.

It is interesting to learn that her grandfather's family members are mostly Christian and Hazwani's family is Muslim as her Christian mother married her Muslim father from Kampung Tutus.

The aim of the fieldwork is to find out youth participation in the sago industry.

A smallholder family's attachment with sago palm and challenges of youths involvement in sago farming

From left to right, researcher's team members with Hazwani in front of her house.

Three generation of smallholder family. Akek (grandfather), Rapiee (father), Suvien (cousin), Hazawani & sister. Rapiee occasionally help to harvest his father in-law sago palm. Rapiee's passion is doing voluntarily work for disable pupils in school. The photo is taken at Akek's garage.

Suvien is a part time smallholder continuing her grandfather's job. He is now slowdown his sago farming activity and works in oil palm plantation. The price of a sago bole is RM7.50 in Mukah. It's lower compare to Dalat's price which is RM12.00. The price is not worth the effort. In addition, work as sago farmer is very hard. Furthremore, her orchard located 20 mins ride by boat. The hardest part is to push the sago boles to the nearby riverbank. He is worn out. Hazwani and sister study in university.
Suvien admitted that his involvement as part-time sago farmer is to continue his family tradition.
A makeshift jetty from Suvien's house.

Suvien owns a lorry to transport sago logs from other farmers to the nearest sago factory, Nitsei. Lorry is a mean to transport sago boles in the case the orchard is closer to road.

Sago suckers are grown at nursery situated at Suvien's makeshift jetty. They need water to grow. Suvien will soon transfer and plant the suckers in his orchard.

Sago palm. The tree grows best at swampy land.

Sago boles (left). Suvien processes sago boles to make wet sago flour called tepung lemantak at his home. He has the machine to crush the sago pith. Wet sago flour is produced individually at home. It is widely used in the traditional Melanau food. Whilst sago flour produced by sago mills.

Sago waste is kept to grow ginger.

Left: Sago bark for fire word. Right the bad sago boles are kept for "ulat mulong" or sago grubs to live. The grubs is a delicacy. Suvien does not eat the grub but his grandfather does. Some people have allergy when eating the grubs.

The final journey of sago boles: They are transported using river to sago mills, Nitsei in Kampung Tabor, Mukah.

¬The End¬

Serian is a durian town.

Dagat came all the way from kampung Jenan, Serian. Its a good season for Dec 2019-Feb 2020

My house is the last delivery
These are durian kampung. Planted 15-20 years ago where the species
                                                  are not taken into consideration.

Finding a good durian from smelling technique.

                                               Some good durian.
This year raining season is quite heavy. I think it effected the quality of durian.

Durian: Pre-workout snack

We are heading to play tennis at UNIMAS tennis court after work. Razin and Nazmi join us as they are still on early year holiday.

We buy durian and local banana (pisang nangka) as pre-workout snacks. Then we drop-by at Dahlia Hostel to enjoy the 'energy fruits' with Sabrina.

The durian from Kak Nana's stall costs RM10.00. We are lucky as it's fleshy and creamy taste (but less sweet). It contains about 15 seeds which everyone eat 3 seeds.

According to Asia.com, 2 medium durian seeds (54g) contain 89 calories which provide about the same amount of carbohydrates that we can get from a medium banana (see photo Nazmi eating pisang nangka above).

Durian is the energy booster that keeps you strong during exercise!

Durian season Dec 2019

Desa Ilmu has been flooded with durian!

"(DUO)RIAN" SELLER - Kak Nana and her daughter; and me.

Kak Nana, a Bidayuh woman is a rare woman durian seller. She is assisted by her daughter.

Kak Nana hails from Tebakang, Serian. She stays in rented inn at Kota Samarahan during durian season.  She is unable to commute because her home at Tebakang is 100 km away from kota Samarahan.

Kak Nana's husband buys durians from kampung folk. He is the one who commute from  Tebakang to Kota Samarahan.

Kak Nana said durian is not selling well this season because it already passed the school holiday season.

This seller claimed his durian is from  Taie, Serian. Tae is well known of a good quality durian.

Durian time with family

This season durians are abundance but a bit tasteless. It rains daily. Durian's quality is affected by rain.  The term is durian 'sejok' (cold) when it does not  taste sweet.
